I'm stuck!

misterangelI'm out of ideas. This doesn't usually happen to me. Help?
My main characters are on the Hogwarts Express (well, a train taking them to a magical school in Wales, commonly known as Pendragon). John (a necromancer moonlighting as a private detective, and about to be embroiled in the cutthroat world of corporate espionage) has just told his two apprentices, who are enrolling this year, that he believes someone is using the college football team as guinea pigs for an experimental new type of magical steroids. He wants them to investigate for him.
I don't know what their first scenes should be when they get there. As they're supposed to be investigating undercover, they'll probably be pretending they don't know each other… so maybe one scene each for Simone (non-magical family, 14yo) and Lenny (19, retaking his final year, after dropping out of a different wizarding school where he's tried to repeat the year already).
There's a gap in my plan between arriving at college that I'm not sure how to fill, and finding their first clues. I want to skip over it, but it feels like I need to introduce the reader to the school and to how magic works, so that later twists make sense.
